DIY: Faking A Painting

Have you ever taken a picture or seen a print that you wished you could turn into a painting? This happens to me all the time, as I tend to not like all the standard paintings you find at most stores and I refuse to pay a lot of money for artwork.  A few years ago, I came up with a method of how to fake a painting. What I mean by "faking a painting" is taking an actual image, print it on a flat piece of media, and applying a coat over the top of it so it looks like a painting. To the untrained eye, it looks like a painting.

For example, I did this technique for all of my paintings in my old living room:

Even though they might look like prints in this picture, up close they look like a painting. I have had several people ask me if I painted them.

With that said, I was needing a few paintings in my bathroom I am remodeling and I couldn't find anything I liked in the size I needed. (A few months back, I posted how I hated our main bathroom and was in the process of trying to make it not so 1970s.) I thought I would write a little DIY on how you too can fake a painting.

To start, you need to determine what image you are wanting to turn into a painting and apply it to a canvas. You can go several routes with this. There are many printers out there who will print directly to canvas material or you could have your image printed on decal and you could apply it yourself. The paintings in my living room were printed directly to the canvas. (Or course I work for a printing company, so it cost me nothing. You can email me and I will give you their information for printing.)

In the case of the paintings for my bathroom, I started with two 10-inch blank canvases and a wall decal that I found at Hobby Lobby.

I trimmed out the images I wanted from the wall decals and applied them to the canvases.

They weren't quite large enough for the canvas, but I will make it work.

I took brown acrylic paint and painted a brown border around the outside of the decals to fill up the canvas.

I ended up with two canvases that looked like this:

Next, you will need some Gloss Glaze. You can find this in the painting section of any craft store. It's clear and will give the effect of brush strokes on the painting.

Apply the Gloss Glaze using a few different types of brushes. Paint the glaze on as if you actually painted the image. Which means, run strokes where there are different colors and use different motions, dabbing, and other painting strokes.

Allow the glaze to dry and you should be left with two canvas prints that do a great job in being "faked" to look like a painting. (Sorry it is such a bad picture, the lighting was super bad in the room at the time. When you see what I will be using the canvases for, it's a better image on how they look like a painting.)

Usually, I wouldn't do the border, but these prints/fake paintings will be hinged to my latest storage project. Stay tuned to find out!

A Between 3 Sisters Picture Day

Hello everyone! Hope you are all having a great weekend. I'm sure many of you are busy shopping and prepping before the Thanksgiving holiday that will be here before we know it!!

Today I wanted to write about our little photo session we had for the blog/my parents. We hadn't taken "sister pictures" since I was in 3rd grade (1995).

Yeah...

Is that cringe-worthy or what? Luckily we've all gotten a little older and I've gone through puberty since then. Seeing as that happened and we found a Groupon for a great photographer in town we thought, why not update our sister picture??

Our photographer, Adara, was so professional and did such a fantastic job making us feel comfortable. The hardest part of the whole day was deciding what we were going to wear and coordinating. You know how easy that is with women ;) I'm pretty sure my dad may have shook his head 30 different times while watching us go through different outfits, shirts, accessories and possibilities :)

So for future reference I would recommend reading up on tips about how to coordinate in family photos. Here is a great site with recommendations:

So without further ado, here are the final pictures from our Sister photoshoot:

We love the way the pictures turned out and feel like Adara did a great job capturing our smiles and our sisterly bond. Our parents also loved the pictures and after the first of the year we will work on incorporating them into the layout of the blog.

Since we had the pictures taken in a downtown area we decided to stick around afterwards and make an afternoon of it. We had a great time wandering around the shops and introducing Luci to the deliciousness of sushi.

Our fun day culminated in a red wine tasting/sleepover at
Beth's house that you can read all about here.

Our picture day turned out to be a reminder of how important it is to make time to simply enjoy each other's company. It's often difficult to make time for this and seeing the opportunity we seized it.

Black Hills Outdoor Adventure

As you can tell, our blogging has been quite slow for the last month. Well, it's summer and I think all of us would rather be outside enjoying the great weather, than inside on the computer :)
I thought I would share some recent photos of my outdoor adventure while on a recent trip to the Black Hills. Enjoy...
Our view of the Black Hills
The lone pine cone Richard's Alumroot
I just loved the color of the rust on the tree bark
Northwest Cinquefoil
Purple wildflower that reminds me of a butterfly
The remains of a dandelion
Curlycup Gumweed
Yucca
Prairie Star
A white wildflower
Blue-Eyed Grass
White Beardtongue
The beginnings of pine cones on a spruce tree
Northwest Cinquefoil
Wild Blue Flax
Yellow Goats Beard
Enchanter's Nightshade
Dames Rocket
Poison Ivy we got into (luckily no reactions)
And a perfect double rainbow to end our day.

Life Lessons From My Camera

For my 30th birthday, my husband bought me a new camera! I have just been drooling over all the really nice photos that other bloggers have taken. I did a bunch of research and decided to go for the DLSR Canon EOS Digital Rebel T1i. Even though there are newer models of this camera I decided to purchase the older model. The price was a lot less then the newer models and honestly not much has changed. The newer models seem to have a little higher mega pixels, the display pops out to the side on the T3i (which I probably would end up breaking off), and the grip has changed. None of these things seemed to make it worth the extra cost of the new model. Also, I found that this camera has several tutorials online, which I hope to watch when I get a chance.

On a walk I took today, I visited the local Japanese Gardens, and thought it was the perfect time to try out the new camera.
I thought I would share my photos. I am still learning, but you can tell the quality of the new camera is much better. The garden was such a peaceful and relaxing place and provided me with so much inspiration. Looking back at the photos, I couldn't help but think that each of these photos really represented some of life's most important lessons. Such as....

Mistakes can be beautiful.

There is always a fresh start.

A strong person and a waterfall always channel their own path.
Always stand tall, without standing on someone.

Even in dark times, the sun will find a way to make its way in.

Branch out to new things, you might not end up being the only one to grow.

Sometimes you have to look beyond your present to get to your future.

With enough time, water will wear down a rock.

No amount of thinking about building a bridge gets it done.

One person's weed is another person's flower.

Impossible situations can become possible miracles.

A life without friends isn't quite as beautiful.

Family is more than just blood.

Marry your best friend.

With new life comes new hopes, new dreams, new ambitions, and new motivations.
A mother will always think of her child before thinking of herself.

Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.
And most importantly, take lots of pictures! Someday you’ll be really glad you did.
